Winter Melons

Researcher: Matt Davis, Oregon State University
Chef: Earl Ninsom, Langbaan, Hat Yai, Eem, Phuket Cafe
Bite: Melon sorbet with Thai chili and tomato water

Melons and watermelons are often viewed as an ephemeral summer treat. However, some varieties store well into the winter. These varieties include Christmas watermelons and the Piel de Sapo melon (a Spanish melon sometimes called the Santa Claus melon). The Piel de Sapo melon has a thick rind, protecting the fruit into the winter. It is very sweet tasting, though milder than other melons.
These melons were grown at Oregon State University, as part of a Western Sare project studying dry farm melon production. Dry farmed melons are grown without irrigation during a dry growing season. This project is trialing melon and watermelon varieties to see which perform best under dry farm conditions.
