Project:
The Heirloom Collard Project (HCP) is a network of collard-loving folks who are working to grow, eat, save, and share collards. The godmother of the project is Ira Wallace, organic grower, author, and visionary worker/owner of the cooperative Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, one of the main HCP partner organizations - along
with Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance, Seed Savers Exchange,
Working Food, and Utopian Seed Project. Participants in the
project include seed savers, farmers, chefs, artists, and gardeners.
The 'Ultracross Collard' grew out of an HCP variety trial, where
21 heirloom parents and winter survivors were allowed to freely
cross pollinate. All that diversity pooled together provides the basis for countless breeding projects and makes it possible for farmers and gardeners alike to adapt collards for their region and our everchanging climate.
