Adelante Mujeres, based in Portland, Oregon, holistically educates and empowers low-income Latina women and their families to own their own farms.

ALBA is an Organic farm incubator program located in the Salinas Valley, California. ALBA’s mission is to create economic opportunity for limited-resource and aspiring organic farmers through land-based education in the heart of the Salinas Valley. Their 100-acre training facility is a place of learning and advancement for hard-working, low-income farm workers and aspiring farmers seeking a better life.

Baby Root Farm is part of the a farm collective mentored by McGrath Family Farms in Souther California. They go beyond organic and use regenerative farming practices and educate other farmers to do the same.

Black Locust is a small scale, family farm owned by Dan Sullivan in Sandy, Oregon.

Blue Fox Farm is a family owned, small scale farm located in Williams, Oregon. The Southern Oregon farm grows mainly for wholesale and farmers markets.

It’s grown into a multifaceted nonprofit with the goal of transforming our region’s understanding of agriculture through hands on experience and ground-up mobilization. We are inspired by international movements towards agroecology and we aspire to build agroecological systems in our local context. In 2020, we began our first small cooperative no-till and permaculture farm on Stoneboat Farm. "

Chadwick Gardens is a special educational garden located on the campus of University of California Santa Cruz, but not affiliated with the university. It provided educational opportunities to beginning farmers and serves as an historical site commemorating Alan Chadwick.

Josh Volk and Matt run a one acre farm in the Cully Neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. They provide a season CSA share to members of the Portland community.

Dancing Roots farm is a vegetable farm just outside Portland, Oregon which specializes in heirloom vegetables. Shari and Brian supply many local restaurants with vegetables and also offer CSA boxes for the community.

Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, Virginia Herrera and Zenon Ramirez worked on Spring Hill Organic Farm for 25 years. Now as Eloisa Organic Farm, named in honor of Virginia's mother, they've made their dream of organic farm ownership a reality.

Flying Onion Farm is a small-scale organic farm in Canby, Oregon just outside of Portland. Jolene and Adrianna together have many years of farming for others and are happy to finally be farming for themselves.

Fox and Bear Urban Farm is a woman owned, queer owned, small scale farm on Sauvie Island near Portland, Oregon. Katie sells to small grocery stores, CSA members and restaurants.

Full Plate Farm is a family owned, small scale, winter farm located in Ridgefield, Washington. Danny grows vegetables during the cool, rainy months of winter in the Pacific Northwest.

Hedlin Farms is a 4th generation organic and conventional vegetable farm based in the Skagit Valley of Washington State. Shawn visited Dave Hedlin to check out the Perennial Wheat he was growing for Stephen Jones of the Bread Lab.

Lil' Starts Farm is a small-scale organic farm serving the community of Portland. This photoshoot was on their farm at the Headwaters Farm Incubation Program, which is a 5-year program. Lil's Starts has a CSA and sells to restaurants like Grand Central Baking.

Locati Onion Farm in Walla Walla, Washington grows most of the regions Walla Walla onions, a large, very juicy, sweet onion. The Walla Walla onion is a variety adapted to Washington that originally came from Corsica, Italy.

Lor Family Farm is a vegetable farm out Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kue and Bao Lor were able to buy their farm with help from American Farmland Trust who bought the land from a retired goat farmer and created and easement on the land that will keep the land from being developed.

Mike Heath is Idaho's pioneer organic potatoes farmer. He began growing organic when everyone around him thought he was silly or crazy, which was over 30 years ago.

On a visit to the Hanelai Farmers' Market, Shawn met some of the farmers of the family owned and operated Moloa'a Organica'a Farm and was invited to photograph the farm. From their website: "We are a family operated organic farm that grows 4 acres of a wide variety of vegetables and about 20 plus acres of fruit trees such as mango, avocado, lychee, bananas, papayas, etc. We sell our produce to farmers markets from Kapa’a to Waipa, and serve restaurants and health foods stores from Lihue to Hanalei."

David and Nancy Brown have been farming in the Newberg/St Paul, Oregon area since 1965. Their farm has been certified organic since 1991 with more than 80 acres. They sell produce to CSA members and wholesale to grocery stores.

Luscher Farm, once a dairy operation owned by Rudie and Esther Luscher, was purchased in 1990 by the City of Lake Oswego. The property and buildings are maintained as an agricultural example with the intent to interpret and educate interested visitors in local food and organic plant production. Persephone Farm is located on a beautiful piece of land in Lebanon, Oregon. Elanor and Jeff are down-to-earth farmers that grows in accord with mother nature's cycles, meaning they don't use green houses to get extend the growing season. They've been farming organically and sustainably for over 27 years.  Jeff's Allis-Charmers tractor has been converted and now runs on solar energy instead of fossil fuels. In addition to selling to restaurants and grocery stores, you can find them at farmers markets in Salem and Portland. Many of these photos were taken with film using my Hasselblad which seemed like a good fit to Persephone's analog philosophy of farming and living.

Shawn photographed Sarahlee for the Whole Farm Management book published by Storey. Rainshadow Organics is a full-diet farm with dozens of varieties of certified organic vegetables, herbs, berries, flowers, pork, chicken, eggs, turkey, beef, and grains on 200 acres. They are located in Central Oregon and is family owned and operated. Sarahlee Lawrence grew up on the land and started Rainshadow in 2010.

Charlie and Paul Reppun have farmed wetland taro in the Waiheʻe and Waiāhole valleys of Oahu for forty years. The majority of their harvest is milled into poi on their farm by Paul, his wife Laurie, and the helping hands of family and friends; it is then sold within the community. They have sold poi and other products at the Peoples’ Open Market Kalihi for decades. Charlie is an active bee-keeper and has an established cacao orchard. Through their examples and mentorship, they have inspired many new farmers.
