Hopworks Urban Brewery, aka HUB
Portland, Ore

Christian Ettiger of Hopworks Urban Brewery
Christian Ettiger, owner of Hopworks Urban Brewery

Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) embodies three things I love about Portland: good beer, responsible environmental practices, and a love of bicycling. HUB crafts 10 organic beers including the Hopworks Organic IPA, Organic HUB Lager, and the Deluxe Organic Ale (DOA). You can also find HUB beers on tap at many restaurants and pubs around Portland.  In 2008, two HUB beers won 3 national awards - impressive for their first year in business.

Christian Ettiger, owner and brewmaster, has put into place a dizzying number of sustainable technologies in renovating the building that houses the brewery and his list of environmentally friendly additions is equally impressive. Additionally, the restaurant serves organic and local foods. Christian has also taken his passion for bikes to inspire the decor of the brewery and has hung over 100 frames above the bar, many of which came from The Recyclery.  Outside, plenty of bike racks beckon bikers to stop in for a pint.

Check out my photos of the brewery to see many of the sustainable practices at HUB and the soon to be famous banana seat head rest in the men's restroom.

The Recyclery
Portland, Ore
The Recyclery is a place for bike lovers and artists. Its rows of handle bars, bins of bike seats, racks of rims, and buckets of sprockets can inspire one to make an original two-wheeled piece of beauty.  If you don't have the time or inclination to create a bike then you can purchase a used one for as little as $20 or as much as $5000.  It's also a place where you can get your bike repaired, overhauled, or customized (like adding a rig for carrying a tripod).

Robbie, artist and owner, recognized an opportunity to recycle all the old bikes he was finding at Goodwills and garage sales. So instead of working at a job he hated, he opened his own business to do what he loved, fixing up old bicycles.
Robbie's enthusiasm for getting people on bikes at a low cost satisfied a huge need in the community and his business grew. He now has two stores in Portland with plans to open more.

Here is a gallery of more photos from my visit of the Recyclery in SW Portland.

Bob's Red Mill • Stone Milled Grains
Milwaukie, Ore

Bob Moore of Bob's Red Mill

Bob Moore, owner of Bob's Red Mill, is an energetic 80-year-old who's been in the stone milling business for a quarter of a century. Bob's Red Mill specializes in natural whole grain foods, gluten free products, and stone milled grains. It is one of the largest stone milling companies in the U.S. and perhaps the world.

Stone milled grains are always considered "whole" and do not need enrichment. The stone milling process retains all the nutrients of the grain unlike most grains found on grocery store shelves.  Sometimes you'll find Bob's products in the cooler section of a grocery store - a sign that more nutrients exist in the grains. The stone milled grains have more of the good oils and enzymes and therefore last longer if refrigerated.

My blog shares additional factoids I learned during my tour of Bob's Red Mill and features my new favorite product - yellow grits!
